Equal under the law
Women and men are equal under Canadian law, and the Charter guarantees its rights to both. Some harmful practices are crimes in Canada, whatever a person's culture or tradition. These include spousal abuse, so-called "honour" killings, female genital mutilation and forced marriage. The criminal law punishes these crimes severely. Gender-based violence is never a private family matter.
